Cambridge University Building Bridges in Medical Sciences Society Event

I joined an excellent meeting connecting academia and industry where speakers from Roche, GSK, and AstraZeneca described their experiences transitioning from academia to industry.

This included challenges and successes through diverse pathways such as:

  • Bachelor’s and master’s degrees straight into industry

  • PhD into industry

  • Industry sponsored PhD

  • Entering industry after post-doc experience

Entry into the Pharmaceutical industry

Spoiler alert: the conclusion from speakers on the sweet spot for roles was described as being just after a master’s degree or PhD, closer to entry-level industry opportunities.

Why? The higher the position or level you try to enter into industry, the fewer roles are available, the more experience is expected, and the more you have to prove either through a relevant specialism or proof of strong achievement vs. other job seekers with existing industry experience.

Takeaway: Companies like the opportunity to mould young scientific talent, shape positive habits and quickly train to the fast pace of industry product development.

The conversations and audience Q&A proved that there’s no ‘right’ way, but lots of different options depending on the right situation for the person.

Why Health Daley Cares

Unfortunately, not all students have access to this direct advice as a result of the strong industry connections at Cambridge University.

The best preparation we can recommend is to develop a strong understanding of your career options by assessing your situation with the help of an industry leader.

Health Daley provides accessible guidance on what to expect from beginning to end in the hiring/ recruitment phase after university and in early career roles to help bridge this gap and help individuals sell their experiences effectively.

Our purpose at Health Daley is to save our clients the time and money lost in googling generic ideas for improvement or cold-calling style books, courses and other templated ways of reaching goals that are not fit for the client’s specific needs.

We do this by providing personalised, actionable advice that will not just make you a better positioned candidate during the hiring process but will empower you to be more productive when getting settled into your new role.

Give Health Daley a follow on LinkedIn to stay connected with our work, take a look through the services on offer on our website healthdaley.com, and if you’d like to start a conversation, get in touch directly at healthdaley@gmail.com and we’ll tailor a conversation to your specific situation.

Equally if you think a colleague, friend, or family member might benefit from professional advice, share our social accounts with them, and spread the word!

We’re excited to partner with you to elevate your career conversations.

Welcome, to Health Daley!
